Whether you are protecting your skin from harmful rays or just haven't had a chance to hit the beach you can get a tan in a bottle! Sounds like a dream come true right? Well, if not applied correctly this can turn into a nightmare. We want you to fake it but we don't want anyone to know you weren't on vacation. Follow these steps to get that tempting summer bronze.

First and foremost do everything you need to do before you self-tan. Whether it's waxing, shaving, showering or working out, get it all done. If this is before an event, make sure you already have your manicure and hair color done too. Self-tanning is pretty much your last step to prep before a big day (or night) and ideally the night before.

During your shower make sure you exfoliate your entire body. This step is extremely important since the self-tanner will stick to dry skin leaving you with dark patches.

You may be rushing (seems like we always are) but make sure you are completely dry before you apply.

Apply a light moisturizer in areas like knees, elbows and ankles to prevent dry patches.

Wear gloves so that your palms don't get tanned. Start from the bottom and work your way up. Think of where the sun naturally hits you. Ideally you can ask someone to help you for areas like your back. Make sure you use the same amount of product all over. 1-2 pumps per area should work.

Make sure you do not sweat or shower for about 8 hours. That's why doing this at night is ideal so you can just tan, wear some lose clothing and just watch some Netflix before heading to bed.

After a night of beauty sleep, you will wake up sexy and bronzed and ready to show off that tan.

Tip: Clarins and St. Tropez have some of the best self-tanners, but if this sounds like way too much work or commitment, I have a solution for you. Guerlain Terracotta Jambes de Gazelle Cooling Bronze Mist is literally a tan in a bottle that can just be sprayed on and dries immediately. I like to put this on my legs or arms for a quick tan. The best part is that it washes off with just soap and water, and it smells great!
