Maral Artinian, the incredibly talented designer behind the fine jewelry brand “Marli ”, was born into the luxurious world of jewelry, as her family owns the European high-end brand “Sartoro”.
In 2014, she branched out on her own with the support of her brother, Arto, Sartoro’s product developer, and founded Marli.
Her contemporary and trendy creations are specifically designed for the fabulously stylish woman.
You hail from a family of jewelers. What made you want to branch out and start your own label?
I wanted to create a line of jewelry for women, who are self-purchasers with a more modern twist and minimalist designs. Simply, jewelry that speaks to the fashionable woman and is part of her everyday style. With classic jewelry your customers are limited.
In just a short time, Marli New York has received exceedingly high critical acclaim. To what do you owe this rapid success?
I credit my success to the right team around me, who were able to translate my vision into reality. In addition, Marli came in to the right place at the right time and satisfied a niche of customers.
Starting your own jewelry label is no small endeavor. Can you tell us how you came to start your company? Were there any difficulties you faced along the away?
Yes, you are absolutely right it is very challenging; however, I can say I am quite fortunate to have my brothers who support me all the way and I can turn to them whenever I need advice. They have been in this business for more than 20 years and I could definitely benefit from their expertise. In addition, when you are really focused on what you do and what you believe in it, the challenges become obstacles that you know you can easily overcome.
How do you get inspired for a new collection?
Being in New York City is in and of itself very inspiring; we have fashion- architecture- high rise buildings - modern technics….all of these elements are sources of inspiration. As you may know Marli is available at Saks stores throughout the US; so walking into Saks on Fifth Avenue by itself is inspiring to create beautiful jewelry.
Your designs are fashionable yet timeless. How do you find that balance?
I have a secret ingredient.
Marli New York is known for graphic and modern designs. What do you get most inspired by?
I like modern. I was never a big fan of vintage. I admire it and respect it but I like modern designs and architecture and that’s where I get my inspiration.
How would you describe your personal style?

Your jewelry has been seen on Hollywood’s elite like Charlize Theron. Who would you say is your style icon?
My style icon is Jennifer Lopez.
I love that your pieces are delicate yet are statement pieces. Do you find that creating delicate jewelry is more difficult?
We spend a lot of time in research and development to create the right technique for our jewelry. We want women to wear our jewelry every day, therefore they have to be durable yet delicate. But I like that this challenge keeps the creative door open.
What is your most cherished jewelry piece, something you may pass on to your children one day?
All of Marli jewelry. I think each piece is unique so if I get the chance I will pass all of them on.
Do you have a piece of jewelry you never take off?
I always wear rings. I feel my hands are naked without a ring so you will always see me wearing them. I choose them based on the outfit that I have on and of course my mood.
