Since Eid is only a few days away, we decided to talk about some elegant timepieces that would make for great gifts. Cartier brought out an exception timepiece earlier this year: Rotonde de Cartier Earth and Moon watch. The unique complication of its movement, technical signature and aesthetics makes it a covetable time-teller. Indeed, the name is inspired by its two sub-dials: one of which represents the Earth and the other represents the Moon. The dials are crafted in polished meteorite stone so as to highlight the astral theme. The limited edition numbered watch features a terrestrial display showing local time, while the second time zone is brought to the fore by a 24-hour disc, and a lunar display with inter-dependent tourbillon and on-demand Moon-phase indications.
Another brand that combined visual impact with haute horology was Graff. The MasterGraff Perpetual Calendar features a complex Perpetual Calendar complication. Interestingly, the intricate openwork dial enables you to view the day, date and month. The watch features a dial indicating leap years. So, if the watch remains wound, you don’t need to adjust it until 2100. Franck Muller’s Grand Date Collection features an innovative, open worked dial, while playing up the sporty technical details. Roger Dubuis’ Excalibur Carbon is quite an oversized timepiece.
If you don’t wish to sport such visually complicated pieces, go for the Baume et Mercier, the very elegant Octo Ultranero Finissimo by Bulgari, the classic Moonphase timepiece by Harry Winston, sophisticated versions by Piaget, Vacheron Constantin and Jaeger-LeCoultre. And if you are on the lookout for a unique artistic watch, nothing quite matches the eggshell marquetry on Piaget’s Altiplano.
