Monica Vinader has been rocking luxurious yet accessible gems since 2002. The contemporary Spanish jeweler –who studied Fine and Decorative arts in London– fashions her feminine designs in her North England studio and has acquired quite a following. Olivia Palermo, Rita Ora, Cara Delevingne and Kate Winslet are only a few of the leading women who swear by her jewels. Azyaamode’s Contributing Writer, Leonore Dicker, sat down with the jewelry designer in her London boutique to find out what exactly makes Monica Vinader tick.

Was jewellery design always on your mind?
I never really planned on becoming a jeweller. It all started when I met local jewellers in Santa Fe, New Mexico who used wire to create beautiful tribal pieces. Inspired by this method, I started making my own creations and before I knew it, I had created my first collection!

Where do you find inspiration?
Travelling! I also carry a sketchbook with me everywhere I go.

What inspired your latest collections?
The story of the lost city of Atlantis and its hidden sunk treasures. We had fun experimenting with calligraphy and creating our own coins! I wanted them to look like an ancient coin, "as though touched by a thousand thumbs". The reference to water lead us to sample with blue stones, Turquoise and Lapis Lazuli were a perfect match and helped bring the collection to life.

What are your preferred pieces of jewellery you’ve ever designed?
Well, I love diamonds and I think cocktail earrings are an essential part of any woman’s wardrobe, so a favourite of mine has to be the Riva Diamond Cocktail Earrings in Labradorite. The friendship bracelets with personalised engravings are also iconic to the brand though!

Any plans to explore the Middle East?
We are definitely beginning to explore opportunities for physical expansion.

Do you prefer wearing Gold or Silver?
I love Rose Gold; it’s flattering on any skin tone and perfect mixed with gold or silver.

Do you think either/or should be worn for specific occasions?
I don’t think any jewellery should be limited to special occasions. That’s why I create pieces that can be layered and worn together, as coming up with your own unique style and really making it your own is immensely gratifying!

Any tips on pairing the latter with particular colours?
I wear my favourite pieces with everything: from my holiday wardrobe, which is a bit more vibrant and colourful, to my neutral toned work wear.

Are diamonds your best friend?
They should be! I am a huge believer that women should feel confident enough to work them into their everyday look – for understated glamour.

How do you best describe your style?
I believe in buying less and investing in really classic essential staples. I would say that my wardrobe is quite minimalist and classic but I do like to experiment with my accessories. I love a structured bag or a statement pair of heels in bold or neon colours.

What’s your most treasured possession?
My mother had an amazing collection of Van Cleef pieces from the 1940’s and 1950’s. I really treasure these pieces and I think their aesthetic has influenced my style.

What gems would you recommend for a bride?
You can never go wrong with a diamond set! I would opt for a rose gold setting. It adds a very romantic and feminine touch.

Should men wear jewellery?
Absolutely! When I am designing for our Friendship Bracelet Collections, I am very careful to keep them gender neutral. Jewellery is a great way for us to express ourselves and communicate style. Men should not be excluded from the fun.

And finally: What’s the best advice you have ever been given?
Focus!
