The 21st Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards

by Yalda Zacca

The Screen Actors Gild Awards (SAG Awards) is the only award show that exclusively recognizes performances. The accolades for outstanding performances in television and film are granted to actors by actors a part of the Screen Actors Guild association (SAG-AFTRA).

Typically, the SAG awards are a good indication of what we are to expect at the Oscars. If last night was any indication, we should expect to see Eddie Redmayne’s ingenious performance as Stephen Hawking in “The Theory of Everything” and Julianne Moore’s portrayal of a woman with early onset Alzheimer disease in “Still Alice” continue their winning streak all the way to the Oscars.

Netflix series, “Orange is the New Black” surprised many with wins in the best ensemble cast in a comedy series category and best female actor in a comedy series for Uzo Aduba’s wildly intense character, ‘Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren’.

Best ensemble cast for a film went to “Birdman,” while “Downton Abbey” took home best ensemble for a drama series.  As many expected, Kevin Spacey snagged the award for best male actor in a drama series for his performance as a ruthlessly shrewd politician in “House of Cards”.
