As if diamonds weren’t magical enough, this breathtaking gem that mesmerizes us with its beauty and sparkle doesn’t only come in white, but also in an array of beautiful colors that makes it even more covetable. Usually colorless with a value that depends on their clarity, diamonds become rarer and more valuable when they put on their charming colorful attire, such as blue, green, pink and red.

While white diamonds are described using the D-to-Z grading scale, yellow and brown diamonds exhibit colors beyond the Z range. In fact, colorless diamonds decrease in value when their color becomes more obvious but it’s absolutely the opposite when it comes to fancy colored diamonds – which increase in value as their hue increases in strength and purity. And it’s important to know that as the color of a diamond becomes more vivid, the gem becomes rarer.

The rarest fancy color diamonds are red, green, purple and orange, followed by pink and blue. As for yellow and brown, they are the most common and less valuable than the rare colors. “What about black and grey diamonds”, you ask? Well, these are surely considered fancy too and the 67.5-carat Black Orloff diamond – which was named after the Russian Princess Nadia Vyegin-Orloff is the most renowned.
