A Trend for Every Decade

The roaring 20’s

A decade best known for masculine silhouettes, as women were parting ways with corsets and form-fitting gowns. We’re not complaining though, as this is the decade that brought us Coco Chanel and these gorgeous looking flapper dresses!  And let’s not forget the Great-Gatsby headbands with the luscious feathers!

Square shoulders and military inspired clothes anyone? Why yes, these were a few of their favorite things! Tis the decade that brought us the little black dress and more conscious-bearing dresses. Women feasted themselves with accentuated jackets and siren-like skirts and dresses.

If you love Marilyn Monroe, Grace Kelly and of course, the movie “Grease”, then you’re probably quite familiar with the form-fitting and belt-ridden attires that the fifties were most famous for. As women were more self-conscious, they started embracing feminine curves oh-so glamorously. What we’ve picked up? The dashing hourglass figure dresses!

Hippies, hippies and some more hippies! With icons such as the Beatles, Bob Dylan and Janis Joplin, the 60’s crowd was sure caught up with floral patterns, short shift dresses and big hair-dos.

Did someone say flared jeans and high-waisted garments? Well then you’ve surely landed in the seventies, where fringes, platforms and flared pants were all it took to shine oh-so brightly!

Turns out Cyndi Lauper was right, girls really do just want to have fun! We’ve got three words for you: shoulder pads and spandex! The aerobics craze did wonders to the fashion scene and everyone went crazy for big bulky shoulder pads and flashy colors.

With “10 things I hate about you” as a reference, the fashion flock was all over low-waisted jeans and doc martins. Sure, it might be minimalist but it’s also very joli!

Whether you’re partial to the roaring 20’s or to the hippie-tamed 60’s, one thing remains true: past decades have taught us a whole lot about fashion and designers. And we’ve come to see that some things can never be broken- or forgotten really- such as Chanel’s signature little black dress or the 70’s high-waisted bottoms.

Since then, fashion enthusiasts have carried the torch yet again, bringing back the fond memories of a simpler time. While some of us may be too young to remember past decades, others are desperately trying to pick up the pieces of the past. Well, whichever way you put it, there’s no better way to reminisce than by going on a stroll down a fashionable memory lane.
