Sequins: the Do’s and Don’ts

Sequins, beads and glitters! Three words that could make your day a whole lot better. Growing up, you prayed for the day you were old enough to wear a sequined dress, but would fill that void with cute little glittery nail polishes. Now that you’ve finally reached the age-appropriate time to shine ever-so brightly, it wouldn’t hurt to know the rules before you can break them.

With the slew of designers using this intricate technique in their collections, there’s no doubt that the sequin-frenzy is going down in history as an important, era-defining look.

So without further ado, here’s our own little guideline for sequins. Go sequin, or go home!

Do match your sequins with neutrals. Go all wild with mixing textures but whatever you do, avoid the overboard-look. Keep everything else simple.

Do go the subtle-way and opt for glittered details, such as glitzy collars, cuffs or even the pockets.

Do pair your outfit with sequined accessories. Simple, but not too simple. The perfect amount of gorgeousness!

Do consider the occasion. Keep in mind that daywear should be much more simple than nightwear, ergo a sequined dress would not be day-appropriate.

Don’t wear a tight sequined number. If it’s too tight, the sequins will just terribly part ways. A big no-no!

Don’t pick a rainbow-y sequined outfit, you don’t want to end up looking like a disco-ball.

Don’t go crazy and over-wear it. This time, forget about the unified look and go for a mixed approach.
