A Conversation with Manar Laktineh

by Leonore Dicker

Founded by Manar Laktineh, Moni&J is a unique label, which designs handbags for the modern-day woman. Each handbag –which combines classic features with a modern twist– is made to add character and depth to any given outfit.
Manar, who was born in Syria and who now resides in Kuwait, launched this powerful brand in 2012. I sat down with this buzzing designer to discuss her aspirations and inspirations.

What does the name “Moni & J” stand for?
The brand's name was chosen to reflect what defines me; Moni was my childhood nickname and J is the first letter of both my husband and twin daughters' names.

What type of woman inspires you in your designs?
I am inspired by a strong independent woman. I am a mother, an entrepreneur, a wife but I still believe in ensuring that I look fashionable every day. I am inspired by the woman on the go who still wants to look professional, fashionable and put together.

Which celebrity would you most want to carry your bags?
Beyonce, Rihanna or Angelina Jolie.

Do you have any plans to explore other leather goods, such as belts, shoes, etc.?
We definitely have plans to explore different avenues in the near future. We have big plans ahead of us.

I noticed a feline-inspired metal cup on each side of the bag. Is this your signature?
This is the Marshal bag and yes it is the signature style of the brand. We have recently launched new colors and textures but maintained the Marshal style.

What’s the most unusual thing you carry in your own bag?
I always carry a lipgloss or lipstick, which is not so unusual. Sunglasses. I never go anywhere without my sunglasses. Chewing gum, a must. Nothing too unusual, but all must-have items.

What's the first bag you've ever purchased/owned?
Louis Vuitton handbag

You just launched your own e-commerce shop, how does it feel to expand on a mass level?
We are so pleased to have launched our e-commerce shop for Moni&J. It is a huge step for us and a very important one. We already have customers globally contacting us via Instagram and to offer them a platform where they can access us anytime via the website is exciting. It also elevates us to another level to be selling internationally via the website.

You are Syrian and based in Kuwait. How does your culture and surrounding inspire your designs?
I miss my country, but living in Kuwait has become my home. I have met so many amazing people in Kuwait that inspire me every day. I am fortunate to be able to speak Arabic and English and to be with someone from Syria one day and Kuwait the next. Kuwait is a fashion forward country, which certainly helps me to be inspired every day.
