For his Fall/Winter 2017-2018 Haute Couture collection, Jean Paul Gaultier channeled a “Ski venue” vibe to the eager front-rowers, showcasing a series of winter-cozy looks named after the world’s biggest ski destinations.
Indeed, models paraded down the runway in lavish ski sweaters and velvet ski pants, as a nod to the blazing ski theme that was filling up the venue. Gaultier’s knack for creating bewildering themes was ever-so present, as he brought back the glorious snowy days in the midst of July’s all-too steamy days- think cropped vests, sumptuous gowns and fur coats with an exotic twist. There were cozy sweaters trimmed with mink fur, blazing ombré coats paired with big snow boots, balloon sleeved sweaters with furred beanies and kimono-sleeved ensembles cinched at the waist with a wide belt. Corduroy ensembles were upholstered with a glitter effect, oversized sweaters served as dresses and long asymmetrical jackets covered velvet pants. Halfway through the show, a series of Indian-inspired models made their way onto the runway in ruffled gowns and billowing velvet dresses with structured shoulders. It was a sari-meets- snowland kind of collection, in the most beautiful kind of ways. Some of the garments showcased photo prints outlined with golden traces while others displayed snowflakes cascading down.
For a designer who really loves themes, the collection did him perfect justice!
