Yes, you read right. The world-acknowledged, iconic designer and creator of one the most important Fashion Houses of all time, Yves Saint Laurent, started out his successful career working for the exceptional Christian Dior. How so? Read on to find out.

Saint Laurent was born in 1936 in Algeria and left as a teen for Paris to start out a career in Fashion Design. It’s in the beautiful city of love that the designer met with editor of French Vogue Michel de Brunhoff and enrolled in the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture, where he studied fashion and gained acclaim for his beautiful designs. It was then that de Brunhoff introduced Saint Laurent to Christian Dior, securing him a job at the world-known Fashion House. Under Dior’s fine tutelage, Saint Laurent’s talent and designs matured wisely and earned him the title of Creative Director after the death of Christian Dior. And so, after taking over as Art Director of the Maison, the designer unveiled his very first collection entitled “Ligne Trapèze”, a collection that gained huge momentum and won him a Neiman Marcus Oscar.

It was only after Saint Laurent was called back to Algeria to fight for its independence that he decided to take the leap and open, along with his partner Pierre Bergé, his own Fashion House. And soon enough, his designs were all everyone could talk about, from the iconic le smoking – his smoking suit – to the beautiful dresses and the grungy designs.
