We sat down with Razan Alazzouni, the Saudi Arabian designer whose modern yet ethereal designs have made a mark on the fashion industry.  A favorite in the region, her coveted designs have garnered international recognition from both fashion insiders like Franca Sozzani and celebrities such as Emma Roberts. Find out her inspirations, her favorite holiday destination and her ultimate travel essential.



Born and raised in Saudi Arabia followed by studies in America, how do you think your upbringing has influenced your designs?
You can see the influences of my culture in my embroidery.
 
Do you think your love of art, and education in the arts at TUFTS University in Boston, has shaped your designs and given you a unique perspective that perhaps other designers may not embody?
I think having an art background gave my designs an artistic edge. I try to make them sculptural.
 
Your designs are often dreamy and whimsical, who is the Razan Alazzouni woman?
A confident woman that would like to expresses herself through her clothes.
 
Your kaftan designs, some of which will be available at Symphony boutique in Dubai during their Ramadan kaftan event, have been incredibly successful. What makes your kaftans standout against your peers?
They are light but modern with touch of culture in the embroidery. I think that is what makes it stand out.
 
How do you get inspired for each collection?
Different things and people inspire me. This time, I mostly got my inspiration from pearls.
 
Kaftan’s have this beautiful ethereal quality to them. What do you wish yours stand for?
I think my kaftan designs are timeless. They embody the culture with a modern cut however they are not following a trend but are a statement on their own.
 
You are a multi-faceted designer, who even designs jewelry pieces. Is jewelry design something you have always been interested in?
 
Yes, it’s something I have always loved.
 
What is your typical workday outfit?
A crisp shirt and tailored pants.
 
Do you have any signature style elements you wear regularly?
My studs.
 
Who is your style icon?
My mother.
 
Where’s your favorite holiday destination?
Capri.
 
What is the one thing you could never travel without?
A blazer.
 
Do you have any styling advice for women?
Be yourself and don’t follow a trend.
 
What is your most cherished item, something you may like pass down to your children?
I have so many! I only buy things I love and I don’t throw anything out.
